Information Lifecycle Management (ILM)

Background

“Between 2006 and 2010, the information added annually to the digital universe will increase more than six fold from 161 exabytes to 988 exabytes.”  (source: IDC March 2007).  Additionally, IDC predicts that by 2010, while nearly 70% of the digital universe will be created by individuals, organizations (businesses of all sizes, agencies, governments, associations, etc.) will be responsible for the security, privacy, reliability, and compliance of at least 85% of that same digital universe.

This dramatic increase in information management is causing real challenges for organisations in two areas:

  • Increased demand for storage capacity
Resulting in challenges for information availability, records and information life management compliance, backup costs and performance and ultimately, overall IT cost and IT performance.

  • Growing cost of Storage Management

The reduction in storage prices is well documented with reductions of more than 30% per year becoming the norm.  However, what is less well documented is that total spending on networked storage is rising by 15 - 20 percent every year.

What many companies don’t realise is that significant reduction in storage management costs are possible and achievable if better information life cycle policies are in place.
