The Evolution of Quality & Business Process Management

Many people believe that quality is a relatively new concept, but in fact quality has been evolving for centuries. In the last hundred years, the sharing of knowledge about quality and improvement methods has become extensive, providing us with a rich array of tools for managing and improving quality.

Over the last 50 years, technology has also developed, providing improvement tools and enabling the sharing of quality knowledge, experiments and case studies, making it easier for quality and process improvement folk to build the case for change in their own organisations.

In 2011, the Six Sigma process improvement methodology – DMAIC was published as an ISO Standard ISO 15053-2011. Today, DMAIC and the ISO quality management standards are the dominant quality and process improvement methodologies globally.
